Firefighters helping firefighters
Support. Relief. Community.

Support. Relief. Community.
The Seattle Fire Department Relief Association was founded as a result of the tragic death of Herman Larsen, the first Seattle firefighter killed in the line of duty on March 9, 1891. The subscription raised for funeral expenses suggested the idea to form an organization among the firemen to provide for emergencies of this nature and also make a provision for relief in case of injuries and illnesses.
Meetings were held, a constitution and By-Laws were established and adopted on March 18, 1892, and the Relief Association was legally incorporated on October 1, 1892.
The SFD Relief Association has continually operated since 1891 with the purpose of helping our members, their families and others through membership dues and donations so that our firefighters may continue to serve our community and each other in times of need.
